Search Engine Journal recently released a story saying that the website builders are terrible for SEO

The main reason being that using Wix, Weebly or Squarespace for SEO puts you at a distinct disadvantage. There are always ongoing discussions around website builders like Wix, Weebly and Squarespace and whether they are inherently bad for SEO.

In this video we’ll take a look at the specific disadvantages the Search Engine Journal identified, which ones they are right about and of course, in my opinion, why they are also wrong about some of the things they have said.

We’ll take a look at the issues they have with Wix and see if they are valid, or whether there are some grey areas for contention.

What is Wix?

Wix is a WYSIWYG website editor that allows you to build a website with zero coding knowledge, using their drag and drop interface.

It’s changed the game significantly for businesses who use the system to reduce costs and create, admittedly decent looking websites.
This sounds good, but why do Search Engine Journal think Wix, Weebly or Squarespace is bad for SEO?

Page Speed
As we know page speed is a known SEO ranking factor and having a fast website is an advantage with all things being equal.
My thoughts on Page Speed

HTML markup validity
Search Engine Journal say that valid W3C HTML markup is important and that sites with valid HTML are more likely to display and function properly and that HTML markup sends signals to search engines. Which is true, as they crawl your website code to undersand your content.

You have no access to your Code
The last major point the article makes is that you have no access to your code. As a result, you’re confined to just only the functionality available within the page editor in Wix. So if you want to add extra functionality or make structural changes, there is no easy way to do this.

Firstly, who is Wix for? It’s for small businesses who don’t have the budget to pay a web developer to build a bespoke website, or small businesses who don’t require complex websites.

If you’re an electrician and you literally only require a page to show the services you require, a contact form and basic info and maybe a blog, do you hire a developer and pay hundreds of dollars or do you use Wix?
If I wasn’t a web developer (I can build websites) then I would use Wix.

Because the positives outweigh the negatives, and there is no reason my site won’t rank at that end of the market.

We know the most important SEO factor is links, so if the backlink profile is strong then at my end of the market then you have nothing really to gain in investing in a bespoke website.
