If your website doesn’t have nofollow links, you could be missing out on a massive opportunity!

// What is a Nofollow Link?

A dofollow link is essentially a normal backlink. A nofollow link is a rel attribute: rel=”nofollow”

When this snippet of code is added to the HTML, they’re telling Google not to follow the link.

// Why Nofollow Links Have Such Bad Press

I want to take you back over 15 years to a world without nofollow tags. Black Hat SEOs were spamming every corner of the internet with links. So in 2005, Google encouraged all blog owners who had sponsored links to label them as NoFollow.

Things have changed and are thankfully clearer now.

Now Google exerts more granular control over how nofollow links are treated.

In fact, it has been treating NoFollow tags as “hints” since 2020.

Their value is now weighed depending on a range of factors such as the type of site, type of placement and relevance to the page content.

So if the top ranking websites have a decent amount of nofollow links in their backlink profile, how can they be a bad thing?

// Are nofollow links expected and therefore discarded by Google, or do nofollow links actually carry some level of link juice?

The idea of building backlinks in the first place is to make your profile as natural as possible. So you want to get a good mix of dofollow and nofollow backlinks.

All backlinks can help you drive traffic.

// How to check if a link is Follow, Nofollow or User Generated.

What is the difference between Natural and Unnatural Link patterns according to Google?

In this video, Jason Hennessey, of EverSpark Interactive explains the difference between an unnatural (or manipulative) link profile VS what Google deems to be a “Natural” link profile. This video serves as a great resource for someone, with a limited understanding of SEO, to better understanding why they may have received a notification from Google stating that their has been a manual action taken on their site for “Unnatural links” which goes against the Google Webmaster Guidelines.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en

In this video, Jason also shows a few examples of black hat strategies that were commonly used by black hat SEO practitioners in an attempt to manipulate both page rank and Google rankings. Some of these strategies include forum profile link building, comment spam link building, directory link building, ego link building, and article directory link building. Again, these strategies used to work prior to Google rolling out the initial Penguin algorithm update on April 24th 2012.

Can you get your site unpenalized if you received this manual action from Google? Yes. You just need to conduct a link audit for your site, try to get the bad links either removed or nofollowed, then submit a disavow in Google Webmaster Tools with a reconsideration request documenting all of your work. If you would like some assistance with getting your penalty removed, EverSpark Interactive offers hourly consulting and we would be happy to help.

00:04 The Importance of Niche-Relevant Backlinks
01:09 Three Ways to Get Niche-Relevant Backlinks

Niche-relevant backlinks are the ones that are created by other websites in a similar niche as your own. The important thing to keep in mind when it comes to niche-relevant backlinks is that they’re not just any links. They’re links from websites that have a similar audience, focus, and style as yours.

Essentially, niche-relevant backlinks are considered high-quality links.

High-quality backlinks mean they don’t come from spammy places like comment sections or directories. They come from sites that Google thinks are trustworthy and relevant to what you do. The more high-quality backlinks pointing at your site, the more likely it is that Google will rank your website higher than others when someone searches for keywords related to what you offer!

These links can be beneficial for your SEO because they show Google that people who read content about a given topic that you specialize in are finding your content or website useful enough to link to it. In turn, that means Google will take note of this fact and boost your rankings accordingly.

Getting relevant backlinks is a key part of marketing your website. There are many ways to do this, but these three are the most effective ones:

First and foremost, you can write guest posts on other relevant websites. Guest posting is one of the most effective ways to get niche-relevant backlinks for your website. You can find relevant websites in your industry and write a post for them, or reach out to the site owners and ask them if they would like you to write something for their site.

The second way is to find websites that have content related to yours and reach out to them with an offer to exchange links. For instance, if you have an article about gaming mice, find gaming mouse-related articles on other sites and ask if they’d like to exchange links. If they say yes, make sure they have high-quality content that’ll be useful for readers who find their site through your link!

The third and last effective way to get niche-relevant backlinks is through the use of social media. You can use social media to promote your content. Using social media is another great way to get niche-relevant backlinks for your website because it helps spread awareness about what you have written and can increase traffic to your site as well as generate sales leads.
